The Gabon global has already started training with the Gunners but may be forced to wait for his Arsenal debut if fellow January arrival Henrikh Mkhitaryan is given his first start behind Alexandre Lacazette. The Armenian playmaker is still of a good age and has a chance to reinvent himself at Arsenal.

The London club bolstered their forward line by signing the Gabon worldwide from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record fee on Wednesday but Aubameyang, 28, did not fully participate in Thursday's training session due to a fever.

But fitting the PEA into the Arsenal pod could bring a fair bit of head scratching and puzzle solving for Arsene Wenger because the other options the manager has at his disposal.

Having been signed for a club-record fee from Borussia Dortmund on Deadline Day, the Gabon worldwide was poised to make his debut at the Emirates on Saturday evening.

"He had a fever so he could not practice a lot - he started yesterday, was still not completely well".

"I will see with the medical department. You need at least two top strikers to play in the Premier League because if one gets injured you have a problem". For the life of me I can't believe he has not gone on to sign a centre-half.

"I think ideally you want him to go to a club not competing with you", added the Gunners boss.

In central midfield, Wenger has said Ainsley Maitland-Niles has a future as a defensive midfielder but it appears more likely that he will continue with the Granit Xhaka-Aaron Ramsey pivot which worked well earlier in the season. "We were the ones who could offer that to him". "That is why it was short in time and tense until the end".

Jack Wilshere will also be assessed after missing Tuesday's loss at Swansea with an illness.
