CBC Member Refuses To Credit Obama For Record Low Unemployment Among Blacks

Trump can't cite his favorite stat about black unemployment being the “lowest ever” anymore
For at least the last few weeks, Donald Trump has been taking undue credit for a historically low black unemployment rate of 6.8 percent from the December jobs report.
Some members of the Congressional Black Caucus boycotted the speech and women members of Congress wore black to protest Trump's history of sexual harassment. But a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics reports has declared that at 7.7 percent, Black unemployment spiked almost one percentage point in January.
While some praised Trump for staying on message and striking a more presidential tone, others pointed out that his tone contradicted his actions.
Trump and the White House have both touted black employment rates, including during the president's first State of the Union speech earlier this week, when he said the rate was something he was "very proud of". He's tweeted about the black unemployment rate being "the lowest ever recorded" three other times this month alone.
"Somebody please inform Jay-Z that because of my policies", he wrote Sunday morning, "Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!"
It took 400 years of slavery, segregation, and institutionalized discrimination in the labor and housing markets to build the wealth gap that we see today. The racial wealth gap continues to grow not only because of income inequality-whites have more dollars to sock away-but because accumulated wealth is a mechanism for transmitting economic success from generation to generation.
"President Trump's racist rhetoric makes the country less safe for people of color by encouraging, emboldening and pandering to those who wish to do harm to others based on the color of their skin", Richmond said. "It's not about money at the end of the day", he said. He also addressed Trump's touting of the record-low rate. You treat people like human beings. But the gain of 500 jobs in that industry made in 2017 are expected to be followed by the loss of 370 jobs this year at a mine owned by Mepco LLC.
Richmond continued: "African Americans have a lot to lose under the Trump Administration and we have lost a lot already, especially when it comes to his justice, voting rights, education, housing, and healthcare policies".
There are some lone voices who argue the Trump-Bannon vision can work. He told BuzzFeed News the State of the Union is an opportunity for Trump to engage the black community and pitch policy that the Democrats have promised to deliver election after election with no results.
For weeks, Donald Trump has been touting a specific statistic.
