Essential ditches Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade for PH-1, will skip to 8.1 due to 'stability issues'

No Android 8.0 Oreo For Essential PH-1, Will Get Android 8.1 Instead

Essential has said that a public release of the Oreo 8.1 firmware will be pushed back a few weeks but that it aims to release an Oreo 8.1 beta in the meantime to (hopefully) help iron out any bugs. The Nokia 8 went a step ahead even started beta testing Oreo 8.1.

Android 8.0 Oreo is undoubtedly the most advanced Android update till date and for that very same reason, people around the world have been waiting for this update on their respective Android smartphones. However, the team announced this week on Twitter that it still has "stability issues" to work out with Oreo that 8.1 will address, and that it's made the decision to focus its energy on Oreo 8.1 instead of releasing 8.0. For a device that runs close to stock Android, one would think it should have received a stable update instead.

The delay will still likely be a big deal for many PH-1 owners, as most of the early adopters of Essential's first Android phone are Android enthusiasts.

The update included EMUI 8.0 (Huawei's custom Android fork), several AI features inside of the camera app, a Dynamic Wallpaper feature, the ability to take 3D panoramas and a lot more, which you can read about here. Just like the Android 8.0 beta, you'll need to have the Android SDK set up on your computer to sideload the OTA file. You could see Picture-in-Picture mode on various third party apps, new notification dots, redesigned notification panel, a whole new user interface, better performance of the device and much more.

As far as we have heard, we have not heard of phone manufacturers running into any issues with Android 8.0.

Things are pretty complicated when it comes to Android updates. We now don't have a release date for it, but we'll let you know when it begins getting pushed out.
