Spokesman Josh Rubenstein said the 12-year-old girl arrested in Thursday's shooting was being booked on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm on school grounds.

There are two shooting victims reported so far, with a 15-year-old boy suffering a critical head wound, and a 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist and is said to be in a fair condition.

Three other patients - ages 11, 12 and a 30-year-old female staffer - were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Chief Steve Zipperman with the Los Angeles Unified School District appeared to confirm that, saying, "We know this is a very traumatic situation for everyone involved, particularly in that classroom".

The gunfire broke out at 08:55 local time (16:55 GMT) at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake District.

A 12-YEAR-old schoolgirl was led away in handcuffs after a gun in her backpack "accidentally went off", injuring five at a school in LA.

Belmont Senior High School is a public high school located at 1575 West 2nd Street in the Westlake community of Los Angeles, California.

"What I want to say is, as a parent, this is everyone's worst case nightmare - worst case scenario and a nightmare for all of us", commanding officer for the LAPD's Operations-Central Bureau, Robert Arcos, said. Two other students and a teacher were also treated for minor injuries and released.

Benjamin Urbina, who was in the classroom at the time of the incident, told reporters the suspect thought the gun was a toy.

Bernal says a gun was recovered. The school is still on lockdown as police continue to search the campus following the shooting.

A 12-year-old girl was being questioned by police after the shooting.

"I just saw something pop", she said. "I'm just scared for all the kids - school is supposed to be a safe place for them, and apparently it's not".

In the same press conference, LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia thanked the first responders and said that everyone was "troubled" by the shooting.
