Syria is making new chemical weapons despite 2013 deal: US
On Friday, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters his government was concerned sarin gas may have been recently used in Syria.
A Syrian couple grieving for their children murdered in a chemical weapons attack on Aleppo. "What I am saying is that other groups on the ground - NGOs, fighters on the ground - have said that sarin has been used, so we are looking for evidence".
Such allegations were timed to undermine the efforts to resolve the Syrian war through a peaceful settlement between the Syrians without foreign interventions, it noted.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry has responded to the United States' claims of chemical weapons use by the government forces in the clashes with militants in Eatern Ghouta.
"Claims that the Syrian state used chlorine gas one moment and sarin gas the next prove that these are nothing more than lies", the statement said.
In April previous year, the USA struck a military base in central Syria with more than 50 Tomahawk missiles, in retaliation for an alleged chemical attack by the government forces on a rebel-held town in the northwestern province of Idlib.
Assad's government is believed to have kept part of its chemical weapons stockpile despite a US-Russian deal under which Damascus was supposed to have handed over all those weapons for destruction in 2014, the officials said.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said at the time the US had "very high confidence" that the chemical agent used in that deadly attack was sarin nerve gas.
The Syrian American Medical Society said its hospitals in the area treated 11 patients for chlorine gas poisoning, according to AP.
In his remarks Friday, Mattis alluded to the April attack, saying, "So they'd be ill-advised to go back to violating" the global prohibition on the use of chemical weapons. Unlike sarin, chlorine gas is relatively easy to produce and is not banned by the Chemical Weapons Convention.

But while it may be tight on the field, Pochettino insisted, off the field this is very far from a meeting of equals. The Reds bounced back from a tough defeat against Swansea City in that game, whereas Tottenham are unbeaten in 2018.
Oil prices shrug off USA record
On Friday, the price of Brent crude was up 0.09% to $69.85 a barrel, having earlier returned to the $70 level after three days. One thing necessary for the market to stay in balance will be a continued rise in USA shale production, says Goldman.
