Tillerson mulls US sanctions on Venezuelan oil

US and Argentina to work together against Hezbollah

Tillerson said in Buenos Aires.

"Obviously, sanctioning the oil or in effect prohibiting the oil to be sold in the United States, or for the United States as well to sell or provide oil to Venezuela, or refined products, is something we continue to consider", Tillerson told the press today from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Tillerson told reporters on Sunday that sanctioning the oil, or prohibiting the sale of it to the United States is something they continue to consider.

"The situation is becoming quite dire in Venezuela", said Tillerson, who added that the administration was weighing the effect of sanctions on the Venezuelan people - and whether they would quickly produce the desired result.

"While this trade has brought benefits, the unfair trading practices used by many Chinese have also harmed those countries' manufacturing sectors, generating unemployment and lowering wages for workers", he said.

Washington may increase political pressure on the Venezuelan government by imposing a ban on oil imports from the country.

Last year's Pew Research Center poll also revealed that 65 percent of Mexicans express a negative opinion of the U.S. as compared to 29 percent in 2015.

The government there has faced widespread criticism over its decision to push up presidential elections under conditions that opponents say overwhelmingly favor President Nicolas Maduro.

The announcement was made during a meeting with Argentinian Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie, after concerns were raised about funds being collected for Hezbollah amongst the country's large Lebanese expatriate community.

Referring to Tillerson's Friday speech insinuating China is a "potential predatory actor", the paper said the current US administration believes it is living during the Cold War, "even though the rest of the world has moved on and is living in 2018".

Maduro shot back, in a video on Facebook, saying that Tillerson "has just threatened us with an oil boycott".

Velit told Andina news agency that Tillerson's trip happens at a moment in which there are some concerns about the United States' behavior on the global scene. "We are prepared to be free and nothing and no one is going to stop us".

The U.S. has already placed sanctions on several high-ranking Caracas officials as well as a ban on financial dealings with the country and its state oil company, PDVSA.

Maduro has accused the USA and its allies of trying to undermine his socialist government. Sanctioning oil exports could make matters much worse.
