Former pope Benedict ready for final'pilgrimage

CWN Editor's Note: Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI has described himself as a man "on a pilgrimage home".

In a rare move, the 90-year-old wrote a public letter in which he said: "I can only say that in the slow waning of my physical forces, inwardly I am on a pilgrimage toward Home".

He said that "it's a great grace for me to be to be surrounded in this last piece of the road, which is at times a bit tiring, by a love and goodness that I could never have imagined".

Benedict wrote a brief letter to Italian daily Corriere della Sera after readers inquired how he was doing.

Benedict became the first Pope in 600 years to resign from the Seat of St Peter when he stepped down in February 2013.

This Sunday marks the fifth anniversary of Benedict XVI's shock announcement that he meant to resign the papacy.

The letter, marked "urgent by hand", arrived at their Rome headquarters on Tuesday morning from "Monastero Mater Ecclesiae, V-120, Città del Vatican", the former Pope's residence. Since stepping down, Benedict has only appeared publicly at major Church events.

Those around him said the former Pope is still mentally aware, but that he needs assistance in getting around, Reuters reported.

The newspaperman said the pope emeritus "accepts his fragility" and said Benedict's words are "a thanksgiving, and at the same time, nearly a farewell".
