Deputy killed, 4 others wounded in Colorado Springs

Deputy killed after responding to motor vehicle theft in Colorado

It happened on his 11 year anniversary with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, according to a tweet. The male suspect opened fire, killing Flick and injuring two other sheriff's deputies and a Colorado Springs police officer, Elder said. A civilian was among the injured, he said.

He leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old twins (one boy and one girl), the sheriff's office said.

In a statement released Friday evening, the Colorado Springs Police Department said the incident began as an investigation into a stolen auto, which officers had tracked to the 4200 block of Galley Road.

Flick is the third Colorado sheriff's deputy killed in the past five weeks.

Elder said the three deputies were in plain clothes at the time of the shooting, but all wore their badges and announced who they were when they attempted to make the arrest.

The suspect died at the scene.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jake Abendshan, Deputy Scott Stone, Colorado Springs Police Detective Marcus Yanez and a bystander were injured in Monday's shooting.

Adams County sheriff's Deputy Heath Gumm, 31, died January 24 after being shot while chasing a suspect, AP reports.

In the last 36 days, we have lost three members of local law enforcement. Abendshan, who appears to have been hit by shrapnel, was treated and released Monday night. The suspect was shot and killed.

A civilian was also shot and is in unknown condition. "We want each officer, every deputy, to know we are grateful for their service".

"There were a number of other officers at the scene who were not injured", Elder added.

The governor ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all public buildings starting Tuesday until the day of Flick's funeral. We are forever grateful for the Deputy's courageous sacrifice.

Hickenlooper calls Flick's death a "senseless act of violence" and asked Colorado residents to provide sympathy to his family and pray for the injured.

The shooting comes just days after the funeral for Adams County Deputy Heath Gumm, who was shot January 24 while chasing a suspect.

Smith believes that, as part of the backlash of the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., more individuals have been willing to become combative toward law enforcement. We are also praying for the other deputies and the officer who were also involved.

Law enforcement agencies across the state have begun to show their support for the life lost.

"In a very freakish way, these tragedies bring out the best in our communities", he said.
