Terror attack at Army camp in Jammu’s Sunjwan

The pre-dawn attack left six others injured, including a girl, after heavily armed militants stormed Sunjuwan Army camp near Jammu, the second largest city in the disputed Himalayan region close to the border with Pakistan.

The terrorists entered the Sunjuwan Military Station at around 4.45 am on Saturday hurling grenades and using heavy volume of automatic gunfire to attack the Army camp.

The two nuclear-armed neighbours have been at loggerheads since an attack on an army camp in Kashmir's Uri left 18 Indian soldiers dead in 2016. The attack is believed to be carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists on the army camp which is spread over many acres and lies in the heart of Jammu along the Jammu-Pathankot highway. The minister said a daughter of a slain army officer was also wounded. "Number of terrorists isn't known, yes, but they've been cornered in one of the family quarters", said Jammu inspector general of police SD Singh Jamwal. In a tweet, she said, "Deeply disturbed by the terrorist attack in #Sunjwan today". Meanwhile, Jaish Mohammad flag has been recovered from killed Fidayeen suggesting involvement of Afzal Guru squad in Sunjwan Army Camp attack.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also took stock of the situation arising out of the terror attack at Sunjwan Army camp at a high-level meeting of officers. One terrorist has been killed so far, while two-three militants are still holed up. The six injured included army wives and daughters.

Reports said the stand-off continued.

In the exchange of firing, junior commissioned officer (JCO) Ashraf Mir and non-commissioned officer (NCO) Madan Lal Chaudhury, who belonged to J&K, lost their lives.

High alert has been sounded across Jammu following the fidayeen strike. She also interacted with the doctors attending them and enquired about their condition and assured all support from the government in the treatment of the injured.

The militants then entered the JCO family quarters in the vicinity and holed themselves up in one of the houses.

Soon after the attack, reinforcement of army and SOG rushed to the spot and cordoned off the whole area amid fierce gunfight, they said.

Earlier, the state police informed that three security personnel and a civilian suffered injuries in the attack.
