Frank Reich will be new Colts head coach, source says
12 February 2018, 01:04 | Ken Black
The hiring of Reich ends the Colts' drama-filled coaching search after Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels chose to pass on the job after he already accepted the it. He reportedly met with Colts general manager Chris Ballard on Friday. Now, the question becomes: who is the right fit to lead the team back into contention? The key for the Colts, though, will be the health of quarterback Andrew Luck. Team officials made the announcement Sunday.
NJ.com reported on how this will have a major impact on the Eagles' coaching staff a week after their Super Bowl victory.
The Colts are coming off a 4-12 season and have missed the playoffs in each of the past three years. He won a Super Bowl with them in 2017 while ranking first in point differential. Lest we forget, it was only two years ago that many of us were debating whether Reich's old boss and the newest Super Bowl-winning head coach, Doug Pederson, was ready.
Presumably, Reich shares Pederson's predilection for risk-taking in play calling, which would be a welcome change to the Pagano era in Indianapolis.
Lastly, New Orleans Saints assistant coach Dan Campbell was recently interviewed for the position.
Reich worked with the Colts as their QB coach when Peyton Manning was there. Reich, if he's hired, is a second choice. Multiple assistant coaches signed contracts thinking they would work under McDaniels. Numerous play calls were created to get the ball out of Foles' hands quickly in order to beat the pass rush, something that Andrew Luck would benefit from.
Reich's most famous National Football League moment came when he was forced to fill in for the injured Jim Kelly during the Bills' 1992 wild card game against the Houston Oilers.
No matter which direction the Colts decide to go in terms of a head coach, the future looks bright in Indianapolis. Reich was in Indianapolis for six years, serving as an offensive assistant for four of them. Ballard has repeatedly stated that his top priority is to get younger on both sides of the ball.
