A popular herbal supplement that some people use in lieu of powerful opioid drugs has been linked to an outbreak of salmonella, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday. In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration tried but failed to classify the plant as a Schedule I Controlled Substance. Some consumers have hailed the drug as a "natural" pain remedy, but some medical experts say it can be unsafe, even deadly. According to the CDC, 28 people have been found with salmonella infections across 20 states; of those, 11 people were hospitalized due to the illness, though fortunately there are no reports of death.

"No common brands or suppliers of kratom have been identified at this time".

Here's what health officials know so far, and what you need to keep in mind.

The FDA is overseeing the recall and destruction of dietary supplements containing Kratom. Herbal products containing kratom are gaining popularity in the US - people report taking these products to treat pain, anxiety or depression, as well as symptoms of opioid withdrawal. The agency added that the company has agreed to stop selling all products containing kratom.

Notwithstanding lightening torment, kratom is expended for its stimulant impacts and used to treat heroin or morphine reliance, as it is said to lessen withdrawal desires.

Kratom plants are native to Malaysia, whose leaves have traditionally been used in tea for treating pain. The agency has also been assessing peer-reviewed research and a growing number of adverse event reports associated with kratom use, including 44 reported deaths.

Kratom is also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak.

He noted that his agency "is taking new steps to bring new, safe and effective FDA-approved therapies to the market for treatment of opioid use disorder".

To this end, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory back in November of 2017 warning consumers not to use kratom.
