Measles cases jump by 400% in Europe Best protection is MMR vaccine
"Over 20,000 cases of measles, and 35 lives lost in 2017 alone, are a tragedy we simply can not accept".
Advisers met Tuesday to talk about how to increase vaccination rates in Europe.
Most of the American measles cases can be linked, in one way or another, with people traveling abroad-which is part of the reason the CDC has recommended being vaccinated against measles before going to Europe. A Region-wide midterm EVAP progress report will be presented at the 68th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in September 2018.
In Europe a year ago, the disease affected 21,315 people and caused 35 deaths, following a record low of 5,273 cases in 2016.
As of last month, there were 122 confirmed cases of measles across five regions in England, with West Yorkshire, West Midlands, and Liverpool and Cheshire being most affected.
Of the cases recorded, 19,100 were recorded in eight of those 15 countries - Romania, Italy, Ukraine, Greece, Germany, Serbia, Tajikistan and France.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and brain encephalitis.
The WHO claims people's fear of jabs, means many, particularly young children, are unprotected.
World Health Organization says countries should have immunisation rates of 95 percent to protect the wider population. The law also imposed penalties on parents who did not vaccinate their children.
After a 1998 paper further confirmed this finding, Wakefield said: "The risk of this particular syndrome [which he termed 'autistic enterocolitis"] developing is related to the combined vaccine, the MMR, rather than the single vaccines'. In Ireland, the first dose is given at 12 months by Global Positioning System and the second dose is given to Junior Infants in school by HSE vaccination teams or by Global Positioning System in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim.
Malta was declared measles and rubella-free in the 2016 report (covering 2015) and has maintained that situation due to its strong immunisation programme.
You or your child can be vaccinated at any point if you haven't been fully vaccinated before.
Today (20 February), ministers of 11 countries will convene to discuss ways they can work together in order to achieve the goals set out in the European Vaccine Action Plan (EVAP) by 2020, including measles and rubella elimination.
