Uproar after Kenyatta National Hospital surgeons performed delicate brain surgery on wrong patient

Staff members were suspended after they put the wrong patient under a brain surgery for a blood clot.

An unnamed man who was due to receive only nursing and medication for head swelling was wheeled into the operating theatre on February 19 and underwent a brain surgery meant for someone else.

The neurosurgeon was said to have discovered the mistake hours into the surgery, when he found no blot clot in the brain of the patient he was operating on.

Dr Thomas Mutei and John Ong'ech will run the hospital as investigations continue into the mishap that led to asurgery on the wrong patient.

In a statement Thursday, the hospital's CEO said that four medical personnel had been suspended - the neurosurgeon, ward nurse, theater receiving nurse and anesthetist.

However, a majority of Kenyans online have expressed their displeasure with matter with many asking how such a shocking incident can happen?

"I apologise over patient mix-up at KNH, I have directed that KNH CEO be sent on compulsory leave until probe is over", Ms Karikui has said. It has emerged that the one who was supposed to receive the brain surgery because of a blood clot may not even need surgery at all, as the condition has been improving significantly.

Two hospital officials in Kenya have been placed on leave for an incident in which a physician performed brain surgery on the wrong patient.

"The patient is in recovery and progressing well".

The doctors' union in Kenya defended the medical team, saying that the "overwhelmed" Kenyan system and staff were to blame for the mix-up.

The hospital in question, Kenyatta National Hospital, has been in the news regularly lately.

Some called for the resignation of the hospital's entire board of management in light of the other controversies at the institution.

"You find one doctor could be doing 10 to 19 operations [in a day]", Ouma Oluga, chief executive officer of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union, told Reuters news agency.
