Double Take: Marvel/Disney's 'Black Panther'
Black Panther is now the second-highest grossing Marvel movie of all time at the domestic box office, surpassing Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend at US$459 million and trailing only The Avengers at US$623.4 million. The latest cume brings the movie's domestic revenue to cross the $500 million mark domestically and its worldwide gross to almost $900 million.
Its Oscar weekend in America, not that it makes any difference to the box office as the Marvel smash hit Black Panther remains at the top beating new filmsRed Sparrow and Death Wish.
In third is MGM's "Death Wish", Eli Roth's remake of the 1974 revenge thriller with Bruce Willis playing the lead made famous by Charles Bronson.
Globally, "Black Panther" has made $56.2 million this weekend for a worldwide haul of $121 million and a global running total of $897.7 million. The 20th Century Fox release was probably hoping for at least $20 million here, so it's a slight disappointment. The film also doesn't open in the growing Chinese market until March 9, where advance ticket sales are said to be on par with last year's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which opened to a cool $69 million there. "Dergarabedian said of the two newcomers" arrivals, "Both newcomers performed to expectations but had to compete in a marketplace totally dominated by "Black Panther".
The totals come on a weekend when all industry eyes are on the Academy Awards, being handed out in Hollywood on Sunday. Final three-day domestic figures will be released Monday.
That's a lot of big numbers and some epic box office history for you. Trending slightly better than Darker (had Freed followed the same path, it would have finished with about what it has earned now) Fifty Shades Freed will wheeze over the $100 million mark before it's done, but that's about it. But none of these prestige-minded movies was widely embraced by mainstream ticket buyers - as when the 2011 best picture nominee "Black Swan" collected about $120 million, after adjusting for inflation; or Mr. Spielberg's "Lincoln" reached almost $200 million in 2013.

In other words, the Euclidean space-time continuum is an endless closed surface, much like the surface of the Earth. The idea here, if I'm understanding correctly, is that the universe didn't exist, and then it did, and now it does.
