The Chicago Bears are making sure they will have the last say with cornerback Kyle Fuller.

The tag guarantees Fuller a $12.971 million salary for the 2018 season and gives the Bears until July 16 to work out a long-term contract.

Oakland trotted out one of the worst secondaries in football in 2017.

Fuller was a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and had a pair of interceptions as part of a strong 2017 season after missing all of 2016 with a knee injury. If they don't match, they don't receive any compensation from the team that does sign Fuller.

Last week at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, Bears general manager Ryan Pace characterized the team's talks with Fuller as, "pretty aggressive", and added, "Obviously we like Kyle, and he had a good season, and we're happy with the way he's progressed". This isn't a surprise because it creates a hard situation to get a long-term deal done and, well, that's probably too rich for Fuller.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Everett was set to become a restricted free agent this offseason. He's more physical in run support and makes more plays on the ball than Amukamara, who will be 29 in June. Since they decided not to exercise the fifth year option for their former first round pick, Fuller had the chance to hit the free agent market next week-that is, if the Bears decided not to tag him. But, after being called out by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Fuller bounced back with his best season.

Fuller, 26, thrived as a rookie, tallying four interceptions and 10 passes defensed as a 14-game starter.
