Hundreds march at Michigan State to protest Richard Spencer's speech
In October, protests broke out as Spencer gave a speech at the University of Florida in Gainsville.
The Detroit Free Pressreports there was a heavy police presence near campus with almost 100 officers at the scene wearing riot gear.
Police say two dozen people, including protesters and Spencer supporters, have been arrested on charges ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. Helicopters buzzed overhead as more than 100 officers clad in riot gear guarded the entrance to the pavilion and escorted some of Spencer's supporters inside.
Bottles and rocks were thrown, according to witnesses, and bloodied faces were captured in photos.
Spencer is a highly controversial figure and often draws massive crowds of both protesters and supporters.
Police estimate about 500 people showed up to demonstrate against white supremacist Richard Spencer.
Eventually, police escorted event attendees into the venue.
"What happened outside was really worrisome and heinous", Spencer said. "We chased them away". She says there's too much "hate and fear".
The campus, emptied of students during spring break, was teeming with hundreds of protesters chanting down Spencer's followers and police, near a remote auditorium where he was scheduled to speak.
A federal judge ordered the two sides into mediation.
Spencer, the 39-year-old firebrand leader of the "alternative-right" movement, billed the event on YouTube as one that would do more than just discuss alt-right ideas, but instead "talk about where we're going and what we ultimately want".
"I heard about Richard Spencer being able to speak on MSU's campus, and I understand that MSU kind of had their hands bound with this decision", Franklin said.
The event was ticketed and Spencer was given control over who is allowed in, denying several local media organizations from purchasing tickets.
