Student killed in 'accidental' shooting at Alabama high school
Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Lisa Herringsaid her goal was to support the family of the teen who died and to reassure parents about the safety of their children.
"Detectives of the Birmingham Police Department have been working through the night reviewing evidence, video and statements on the tragic incident that took place at Huffman High School yesterday". The school was placed on a brief lockdown, and police were called to the scene.
Arrington, along with a 17-year-old boy who was critically injured, were the victims of an apparently accidental shooting at the school.
"Tonight, let us wrap our arms around the Huffman community", Randall Woodfin, mayor of Birmingham, tweeted.
"At this particular time, we're considering it accidental until the investigation takes us elsewhere", Birmingham Police Chief Orlando Wilson said in a statement. "Our hearts are heavy", the mayor said.
An Alabama student was killed and another injured in a shooting at Huffman High School.
A school employee also sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
Police have yet to release the name of the shooter, nor the reason why the shooting happened.
"Right now we have a lot of unanswered questions", said Wilson, who has also been interviewing students at the school about the incident.
According to another AP report, the school had metal detectors and other security measures in place. "There are so many unknowns at this time". The students were rushed to University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital, where one of them, a 17-year-old girl, was pronounced dead, Wilson said. The delay will allow system to conduct a thorough safety sweep of the school. The AP reported that last week at the same high school, a gun was found outside one of the school's entrances after a threat against the school was reported.
In the meantime, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey offered his prayers to the victim and her family.
Alabama and many other states are searching for ways to improve school security following the massacre of 17 people in February at a high school in Parkland, Fla. The proposals face a tight deadline before the end of Alabama's legislative session this election year.
