Nagaland: NDPP chief Neiphiu Rio to take oath as new CM on Thursday
Meghalaya new Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is amongst the top brass in the field of politics who attended the oath-taking ceremony of Nagaland's new chief minister, Neiphiu Rio in Kohima. The cabinet reiterated that the government would play the role of a facilitator in Naga peace process, and urged Naga groups that haven't yet done so to join ongoing negotiations.
Mr Rio informed that he will visit New Delhi on March 13 next to meet the Prime Minister and will discuss with him on the various issues pertaining to the state, including the developmental activities. In a first, Rio took the oath as the new Chief Minister in full public view at the Kohima Local Ground along with the council of ministers. Mr Rio informed that all the PDA alliance political parties have the same agenda in their manifestos for the solution of Naga political problem.
The newly-mandated alliance government, comprising 32 elected members of the NDPP, BJP, JD (U) and an Independent, however, has made a decision to take oath before the public.
The Governor dissolved the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the source said. The 67-year-old former Nagaland Chief Minister was elected unopposed in the Nagaland Assembly elections after his rival from the Naga People's Front (NPF) withdrew his nomination.
Ten other ministers were also administered oath by Acharya today.
The NPF, unseated by the Rio-led Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and BJP combine in the recently held Assembly polls, emerged as the single largest party with 26 MLAs.
"'We have also chosen to conduct the function at this historic place in honour of the people we are to serve and to also remind ourselves publicly of the responsibilities that lie upon our shoulders", the chief minister said.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah will attend the ceremony. In the outgoing government, all the 60 MLAs sat on the treasury benches.
