Updated - Relegation-threatened Southampton fires manager Mauricio Pellegrino

Mauricio Pellegrino gets the boot at Southampton

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino apologised to the club's fans following his side's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle, saying their performance did not represent the values of the club.

Complacency is unsafe, but when it is mixed with arrogance and disinterest, it becomes combustible.

By contrast Southampton remain firmly in the mire and their display will raise further concerns as to whether Pellegrino is the right man to keep them up. The best players aren't content with just the one goal, your Messi's and your Ronaldo's, we're not saying that Kenedy's closing in on that bracket, but he has grabbed a second against the Saints! I think we tried to be in the game, to score one, but we were never a threat for Newcastle. We already had a bit of pace with (Christian) Atsu and (Jacob) Murphy and the ability and work rate of (Matt) Ritchie, but Kenedy is good on the ball, he does not give it away easily and he gives us more control.

"We've now got another possibility next week and hopefully we can give them a good game that they can enjoy".

Strong words, though, need to be backed up by deeds. "We have to show the desire to survive and anything less won't be enough".

His form is so good at the minute that many are touting him to be on the plane to Russian Federation in the summer as part of Gareth Southgate's squad, and based on their reaction to his performance against the Saints, few Newcastle fans would disagree with that.

Since Christmas, only Manchester City and Liverpool have beaten United.

Rafa Benitez says he has an unshakeable belief in his Newcastle United team.

"This was a fantastic game to win", said Benitez.

After that, he failed to really establish a place in the Chelsea team and things looked bad after a disappointing loan spell at Watford in 2016.
