Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Did Not Thank Donald Trump in Farewell Speech

President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning said he was replacing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with former CIA director Mike Pompeo

Just hours after he was sacked by President Donald Trump, outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson defended his achievements as secretary of state and told reporters he is delegating all his authorities at the end of Tuesday. Asked about the values of Trump, Tillerson says, "the president speaks for himself".

"Mike Pompeo's impending move to secretary of state is sure to result in a much more hawkish and confrontational us policy towards Iran", John Glaser, director of foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute, told FOX Business.

The President announced in a tweet that he had nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to take up the role, saying the 54-year-old "will do a fantastic job".

While Trump thanked Tillerson "for his service", he was sparing in his praise of the 65-year-old former Exxon chief, long rumored to be on the way out. If confirmed by the Senate, Haspel would become the first woman to lead the agency. Tillerson was a moderating voice and more in line with mainstream thinking on foreign policy than the president he irritated once too often, but he was a bad fit for the job.

"He had no idea that this was occurring", said Steve Goldstein, undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs.

Speculation that Tillerson would be fired grew last fall with the reports of his "moron" insult, which the secretary state never personally denied. Citing the Iran nuclear deal and other issues, Trump said he and Tillerson were "not really thinking the same". "It's disappointing that the president has made a habit of firing the nation's highest-ranking officials in the most demoralizing ways possible - causing unnecessary chaos, demonstrating his poor leadership, and sending the message that no one is truly a respected member of his administration". A shaken Tillerson relinquished control of the State Department. A veteran CIA clandestine officer, Haspel is backed by many in the U.S. intelligence community but is regarded warily by some in Congress for her involvement in the agency's "black site" detention facilities.

The State Department was unaware of the reasons for Tillerson's firing, an official there said Tuesday morning.

"We got along actually quite well but we disagreed on things", Trump said.

Trump on Tuesday singled out the Iran nuclear deal as one of the main differences he had with Tillerson. I wanted to either break it or do something, he felt a little differently.

Pelosi said this proves Trump's decisions are based on the "whims" of Russian President Vladimir Putin because Tillerson said the poisoning of a former double agent "clearly" came from Russia. "We're going to work with our European partners and allies to see if we can't address these concerns", Tillerson said at the time.

However much sleep Pompeo has been getting at the Central Intelligence Agency, he's likely to get less when he moves to the State Department.

But the Senate Intelligence Committee's hearing to confirm her for the top CIA post could be rocky.

Senior White House officials said Trump wanted his new team in place before any summit with Kim Jong-un, who invited the U.S. president to meet by May after months of escalating tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. "Whether addressing the North Korean threat, fixing or nixing the broken Iran nuclear pact, or dealing with Russian Federation and China, any president deserves the right to have not only the strongest team available working on behalf of the American people, but also the individuals that he believes are best able to collaborate with him to achieve his policy objectives".
