SpaceX will add lots of space traffic over the next few days
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying ten satellites for the Iridium communications company blasted off from Vandenburg Air Force Base. Pacific Time from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. SpaceX didn't attempt to recover Falcon 9's first stage after Friday's launch. Iridium confirmed shortly after launch that its Network Operations Center (NOC) made contact with all 10 satellites, which are now preparing to begin testing. "It's a giant steel & webbing catcher's mitt superstructure on a high-speed ocean ship", Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, tweeted.
Generally, it falls back to earth and hits the ocean and is never used again but considering Space X mission, company plans to land Payload fairing on highspeed boat. For IRDM launch which happened on Friday Morning, a ship, named Mr. Steven, went hunting out in the sea and will be attempting to catch half of the fairing with a giant net.
SpaceX will not attempt to make another recovery of the rocket's first stage after today's launch. That means it will need a grand total of eight launches to get them all into space, so it won't be very long until we hear about the next one.
At least twice, SpaceX guided fairing halves to soft landings in the ocean.
SpaceX previously tried to catch the fairing back in February 2017.
It is expected that the constellation will be completed this year.
Multiple companies are rushing to be the first to deploy satellite constellations to provide broadband data connections, taking advantage of advances in miniature electronics and batteries, as well as cheaper launch costs, to fill the globe's apparently endless demand for more connectivity. SpaceX will deliver a total of 75 new satellites to orbit, including nine in-orbit spares.
The Iridium project, though less flamboyant, will replace the world's largest commercial satellite network of low-Earth orbit satellites in one of the largest "tech upgrades" in history, Iridium has said.
With 50 Iridium Next satellites now in orbit, plans call for three more Falcon launches to carry the final 25 satellites into space.
Today's planned launch is the first of two planned by SpaceX in the next four days.
The reusable Falcon 9 rocket was tested in McGregor, Texas.
