France to spend €1.5bn on artificial intelligence by 2022

The clarification came after Kurdish representatives said after a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Thursday that France would send "new troops" to the region.

But the United States, as well as France, have worked closely with the YPG in the fight against Daesh in Syria, much to Ankara's anger.

Scam artists used a fake French presidency email address and first lady Brigitte Macron's name to try and get into fancy restaurants and entertainment venues around the world, prompting the president's wife to file a complaint for identity theft. The SDF is dominated by Syrian Kurds though it also includes Arab forces.

The PYD and its armed wing People's Protection Units (YPG) are part of the SDF. Kurdish officials and Macron's office said the meeting covered the situation in the north of country, where Ankara launched its operation nearly two months ago.

Turkey has since then threatened to attack the SDF-controlled town of Manbij in Syria bordering Afrin, which was taken from IS in 2016 - and where the U.S. has stationed troops.

Macron spoke to US President Donald Trump on Wednesday about the situation in northern Syria.

"If it's accurate, the statement on mediation between Turkey and SDF amounts to crossing the line", President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday. The Kurdish YPG has been at the forefront of the battle.

Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne said the government's willingness "to listen, to hold a consultation, to have a dialogue" was unchanged, stressing she is meeting with unions on Thursday.

France and the European Union consider the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which is pushing for a separate Kurdish state in Turkey, to be a terrorist organization.

France said on March 30 it is not planning a unilateral military operation in Syria outside the worldwide coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) after senior Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) officials claimed Paris was planning to send troops.
