3.2-Magnitude Earthquake Reported In Pawnee County

Earthquake of magnitude 6.2 strikes off Mindanao in Philippines, reports USGS

The magnitude 5.3 natural disaster hit about 35 miles southwest of Channel Islands Beach, according to the California Integrated Seismic Network.

The quake was centered almost 10 miles deep in the Pacific Ocean.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

A strong quake struck the Channel Islands region on Thursday afternoon and rattled much of Southern California.

The temblor hit at 12:29 p.m. and was centered 23 miles east-southeast of Santa Rosa Island and 36 miles southwest of Channel Islands Beach, according to the USGS.

One woman said the quake's "rolling motion" caused walls to creak and items to swing in Torrance.

Residents in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties can likely expect aftershocks, said seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones.

Residents in the Los Angeles-area took to social media to say they felt shaking.

Several Santa Clarita residents felt a brief, minor rumble Thursday for a 5.3 quake.

Officials from various emergency-response agencies said residents should use the quake as a reminder to formulate an escape plan, prepare and natural disaster kit for their homes and cars and follow the advice to "drop, cover and hold on" when shaking occurs.

During a press conference, Dr. Andrews said the off-shore quake is the strongest to hit the area since March 28, 2014, just over four years ago, when La Habra was rocked by a magnitude 5.1 shaker.

Swindle added that crews drove around to assess possible damage Thursday afternoon.
