Earlier, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement: "The Prime Minister's visit is taking place in the backdrop of Pakistan's support to President Ghani's offer of peace talks with the Taliban for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and strengthening bilateral engagement", read a statement issued by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Besides the Afghan president, the prime minister will also meet Afghan Chief Executive Dr Abdullah Abdullah.

"The two leaders reiterated that terrorism was a common enemy and threat", the statement said.

The statement said the two sides discussed Pakistan's connection to the Central Asia, energy transition, Quetta-Kandahar-Herat and Peshawar-Jalalabad railroad projects and construction of Peshawar-Jalalabad highway. Bilateral trade, return of Afghan refugees, combating drug production and clamping down on the narcotics trade will also come under discussion during the meeting.

"Pakistan want peace and a stable Afghanistan as no one desires peace in that war-turn country more than us", Khawaja Asif, Pakistan foreign minister said on Thursday.

Pakistan Prime Minister said he and his team are ready for cooperation in this respect.

In March, the Afghan president during a meeting with Pakistan's National Security Adviser (NSA) Lt General (retd) Nasser Janjua had extended an official invitation to the premier to visit Afghanistan.

Abbasi's trip to Kabul comes after Pakistan has been under pressure from Afghan government and Washington to stop offering safe havens to insurgents blamed for attacks in Afghanistan, a charge Islamabad denies.

Kabul and Islamabad regularly trade accusations of harboring the other country's militants and the harsh language has underscored the strains between them.

She noted the meaningful role that Pakistan, partnering with the United States, could play in achieving a peaceful resolution in Afghanistan, a press release by the USA embassy had said.

Since then, several attempts have been made, with little success, to resume the stalled peace process by a four-nation group comprising of Pakistan, Afghanistan, the USA and China.

"The Prime Minister's visit to Afghanistan is aimed at strengthening the positive momentum in bilateral relations and help augment joint endeavours in the pursuit of durable peace, stability and economic prosperity in the two countries, and the region", it said.
