Man arrested after child porn found in locker sold at auction

Bail set at $2 million for St. Petersburg man on child porn charges

A one-time top Vatican diplomat was locked up Saturday on allegations of downloading child pornography during a Christmas season visit to Canada, officials said.

The Vatican statement gave no details of the specific accusations against Capella, who was recalled from Washington last September.

The US State Department notified the Vatican in August through diplomatic channels of a possible violation of child pornography laws by a member of the diplomatic corps of the Holy See in Washington, the Vatican said in September.

A Vatican statement said that Monsignor Carlo Capella was being held in gendarmerie barracks inside the Vatican, and that his arrest follows a Vatican investigation.

The Vatican said on Saturday its police had arrested a monsignor who once worked as a diplomat at its U.S. embassy and was recalled previous year after the U.S. State Department said he may have violated child pornography laws.

Capella was charged with articles of the Vatican penal code punishing the possession and dissemination of child pornography.

The violation carries a prison sentence of one year to five years and a fine from 2,500 euro to 50,000 euro (about $3,000-61,400).

A Dayton ISD teacher has been arrested and charged after investigators found child pornography being stored and shared from his home computer in Humble, according to the Harris County Pct.

"The Holy See, following the practice of sovereign states, recalled the priest in question, who is now in Vatican City", and opened the investigation, the Vatican press office had said in September.

Capella, who has the title of monsignor in an honorary manner and is not a bishop, worked as a counselor for the Nunciature in Washington and before that had worked in The Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State (Holy See).
