Israeli Authorities: Palestinian who tried to stab shot

Palestinian protesters use slingshots to throw stones during clashes with Israeli forces at the Israel Gaza border east of Gaza City

But rights groups have harshly criticized Israeli soldiers' actions, and Palestinians say protesters are being shot while posing no threat to troops.

Palestinian media reported that a tank had fired shells at the men.

In Khan Younis, also in Gaza's south, Usama Khamis Musallam Qudeih, 29, died after he was shot in the head by soldiers.

In all, 22 Palestinians were killed in Gaza over the past week, including 16 involved in last Friday's protests, according to Gaza health officials.

Twenty nine Palestinians have been killed since the protests began on March 30 along the frontier of the Gaza Strip.

Photo taken from the Nahal Oz kibbutz in southern Israel shows soldiers using tear gas and live ammunition as Palestinians burn tires during a protest on the Israel-Gaza boundary on 6 April.

The medical humanitarian organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), warned that in the weeks to come, more medical assistance would be required due to the increasing intensity of use of force by the Israeli forces. "Palestinian factions must engage seriously to allow the Palestinian Authority to resume its full responsibilities in Gaza, which is crucial for improving the situation of the people in Gaza", the European Union stated.

According to the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate, Murtaja was shot by gunfire while standing 350 meters from the border fence. The EU said on Saturday the violence "raises serious questions about the proportionate use of force which must be addressed".

The riots on the Gaza border, which have drawn tens of thousands of protesters, have featured mass-marches to the Israeli border and attempts to scale the security fence and flood into Israeli territory.

Drawing worldwide criticism for its use of live fire, Israel said it is doing what is necessary to stop violent protesters from damaging or breaching its fence with the blockaded enclave. He died in hospital on Saturday.

It called for clarification of Israeli military reports that Palestinians stoned and firebombed their positions and tried to cross the fence into Israel.

"We echo the call by the UN Secretary-General for an independent and transparent investigation into these incidents, with a view to holding accountable those responsible".

Israel's army said it "does not intentionally target journalists".
