Kim Jong-un outlines his vision for North Korea's future to party leaders
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) issued commentary about two weeks after that finally hinted at confirmation for the upcoming meeting between North Korea, the USA and South Korea.
WASHINGTON - North Korea's government has communicated with the United States to say that leader Kim Jong Un is ready to discuss his nuclear weapons program with U.S. President Donald Trump, officials said Sunday, increasing the likelihood that the unprecedented summit will actually occur. The North had conveyed the invitation to a visiting delegation from South Korea, which in turn travelled to Washington and relayed the message to Trump. A meeting between the two world leaders has been on the table since a surprise announcement was made by a South Korean official in May.
CNN reported that North Korea wants to have the meeting in its capital, Pyongyang, and that preparations are underway for a possible meeting between Pompeo and the head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, North Korea's intelligence agency. -North Korea communications had taken place but said the two sides had held multiple direct contacts.
Hearing that the USA has confirmed Kim's willingness to discuss "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", however, is far from a surprise.
Kim chaired a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee (C.C.) of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) "upon the authorization" of the organ, state media said, providing a report on the "development of the recent situation on the Korean peninsula".
North Korean and United States intelligence officials have even held a meeting in a third country to discuss the possible venue for the talks, the report said. "I think it's going to be a very exciting thing for the world", he said. "Hopefully it will be a relationship that will be much different than it has been for many, many years".
The North Koreans are pushing to have the meeting in their capital, Pyongyang, CNN reported late last week, citing Trump administration officials, although it is unclear whether the White House would be willing to hold the talks there.
It is scheduled to take place without the months of groundwork that usually precedes such meetings. Secret talks on the specifics are said to be ongoing.
The White House had previously said the president would meet with Kim before the end of May.
Beyond that, a detailed agenda for the talks will need to be set.
