BJP Releases First List Of 72 Candidates For Karnataka Assembly Polls

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said the Congress party had not yet finalised the list of candidates for the upcoming state assembly polls and that a "fake" list was in circulation to create confusion.

According to reports, veteran state leaders Jagadish Shettar and KS Eswarappa will contest from Hubli Dharwad Central and Shimoga Assembly seats, respectively, it said.

However, a final decision in this regard would be taken by the Central Election Committee of the party, which is expected to meet either on Wednesday or Thursday. "Later, in the days to come, the remaining candidates' list will be announced", he told reporters in Bengaluru.

The decision was taken at the party's central election committee meeting which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and other senior party leaders, including Rajnath Singh at the party headquarters in New Delhi. The BJP has also fielded its Lok Sabha MP B Sriramulu in the polls.

The meeting was preceded by a show of strength with the BJP inducting former Congress MLA Malikayya Guttedar.

The battle for Karnataka has begun officially with the BJP on Sunday releasing its first list of candidates. Another defector, Mallikarjun Khuba, has been accommodated in Basavakalyan. She was elected in the 2013 elections from Nipani constituency. Yeddyurappa will be contesting from Shikaripura seat.

In a two-day tour of the election-bound Karnataka starting Thursday, BJP president Amit Shah is scheduled to visit key places in Mumbai-Karnataka region, in north-west part of the state, that holds symbolic value for the BJP's core vote base.
