Freshman helps Utica top Danville

The Wildcat softball team went 3-3 this past week in Thursday's contest against Winona State, Saturday's contest against University of Mary, and Friday's contest against Minot State.

Despite a 7-3 loss in the regular-season finale Wednesday night against Springfield in extra innings, the Wolverines enter the postseason 12-8 on the season and are now ranked sixth in the latest Division III power rankings.

The Tigers are going through the motions a young team goes through.

"From scoring zero to 20 in the same day was really something to watch, we ended up averaging 10 runs a game, but needed to score 20 points in one game to get there", Short said.

Pietersen smashed three hits and drive in two runs, while Grainger had two hits and drove in four runs in support of Nelson, who totaled nine strikeouts. From there, they added another run in the third, which put them ahead 2-0.

In need of a spark, Newman (5-1) broke the game open in the top of the fifth. "Our girls competed hard and had the lead most of the game, but we couldn't overcome a couple of defensive miscues and a questionable call".

Friday, senior Spencer Rojahn will be pitching for the Vikings in the second game of the series.

Nate Huarte hit an RBI single to knock in the first run, and after a pickoff attempt at third went bad during Colton Sales' at-bat, another run scored.

Mackenzie Rousseau took the loss for the Lady Warriors.

"It was just good to get out on the ballpark", Wagner said.

"We knew Mary wasn't going to give up without a fight, so our defense was going to have to be ready for anything", said Shumaker.

If there is one thing pitcher Jordyn Kleman does not like on the mound, it's those pesky base runners. Zoe Waters added a tripled and four RBI, while Abby Reeves had a double and two RBI.

Freshman Brock Pearce had a single and scored a run.

The Panthers cut their deficit to 7-5 in the fifth inning as Alex Rueck reached base on an error and Anderson and Dudley each walked before Rueck scored on a wild pitch.

"The first win was big for the 'Cats", said Shumaker. "It's good for us to see we can hang with a pitcher like that".

And that was just a preview of what was to come as Boles smacked an RBI double to left-center in the fourth inning to send home Pritchett's pinch runner Haley Kyle, giving the Eagles a 10-0 lead.

Bryant pitched six and one-third innings with ten strikeouts, seven earned runs, and a walk. But Mary kept the game alive with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 12-5, then scored an additional four runs in the sixth to trim the advantage to 12-9.

The frogs hopped on the Tigers in the first inning with four runs to build a lead with cushion.

The Lady Knights tied the game in the top of the seventh with two runs of their own, but it was all for naught as the Lady Rams won the game on a three-run homer to walk off with the victory.

"Our goal was to score first and we accomplished that goal in both games", said Shumaker.

"We have to keep moving forward and improving our play", Daczkowski said, "We're looking forward to this week and new competition". After a single reloaded the bases second basemen Emily Hogan hit a bases clearing double to give the Bears their first lead of Game 2.
