Seattle Seahawks cancel workout with Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick is in the middle of a collusion case against the NFL over allegations that league owners have blackballed him

DEC. 11 2016 FILE

The Seattle Seahawks contacted the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback about possibly being a backup quarterback for Russell Wilson but wanted Kaepernick to sign with the stipulation that he does not take a knee during the 2018 National Football League season, TMZ reports.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media confirmed the cancellation by the Seahawks, but said it was not because of Kaepernick's declining to stand during the anthem, but rather a lack of "a firm plan" on "how to handle everything".

No NFL team has worked out Kaepernick since he became a free agent after the 2016 season. Marcus Smith knelt for the anthem in December 2017 and then was re-signed by the team in March 2018. However, the trip was canceled over the last-minute stipulation regarding Kaepernick's protests during the anthem. That said, the team may be trying to use the potential employment of Kaepernick as a way to set the stage for a global resolution of the issue, including but not limited to a settlement of his collusion grievance.

Kaepernick himself has been deposed under oath by the NFL's attorneys earlier this week in NY. Eventually he was joined by his San Francisco 49ers teammates, including safety Eric Reid, and players on other teams followed suit.

Through talks leading up the Kaepernick's visit the matter of kneeling during them anthem came up. Should the two sides be able to work beyond the bumps in the road, Kaepernick would still appear a capable backup to Russell Wilson, as he still maintained a high passer rating and completion percentage even on a downtrodden 49ers team.

Three NFL owners are on the deposition list for Kaepernick's lawsuit: Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots and Bob McNair of the Houston Texans.

While the anthem protests eventually died down last season, during the owner's meeting the topic was brought back up. Later, however, head coach Marvin Lewis asked Reid to clarify his answer on protesting, but Reid declined and left without an offer from the Bengals.
