Most of the brand's cars run on the fuel, resulting in Jaguar selling 26 per cent fewer vehicles so far this year, and Land Rover selling 20 per cent fewer.

"We are however continuing to recruit large numbers of highly skilled engineers, graduates and apprentices as we are over-proportionally invest in new products and technologies".

JLR employs some 40,000 people in total making it the UK's biggest vehicle manufacturer in terms of both output and heads.

Earlier in the year, JLR announced that it would cut production at its Halewood plant in Merseyside in light of Brexit uncertainty.

"We also remain committed to our United Kingdom plants in which we have invested more than £4bn since 2010 to future-proof manufacturing technologies to deliver new models". Diesel demand fell by 37.2% last month.

Latest employee figures say there are 3,200 people employed at the Castle Bromwich site and a further 10,000 at Solihull.

The automaker saw a 26% drop in sales in the United Kingdom in the first three months of 2018 while sales in Germany fell 32%. A source told the Reuters news agency that 1,000 roles would be cut.

JLR said in January that it would cut production numbers at its Halewood plant due to slowing new auto sales, which a company spokesman linked to "concern around the future of petrol and diesel engines" and "general global economic and political uncertainty". As an industry in which investment is heavily reliant on forward planning, industry bodies have been lobbying extensively for greater clarity around a Brexit trade deal.

Last year, global sales hit a record, but the company acknowledged that the United Kingdom market was "tough". Many of them are based at the Solihull facility.

"This is desperately bad news for all those affected and a worrying sign of how the deep uncertainty around Brexit is continuing to damage Britain's economic performance", said Peter Kyle MP, a member of the pro-Remain, Open Britain campaign, condemning the government's decision to rule out single market and customs union membership.
