DICE Working On A Battle Royale Protoype For Battlefield V

Word is that Battlefield developer DICE is now testing a battle royale mode for Battlefield V.

The news of Battlefield V's battle royale mode comes hot on the heels of reports that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 ditching its single-player campaign to focus on its zombies mode and a new battle royale section. The key word is "prototype" - this hasn't been greenlit for full development, and is unlikely to be done in time to meet the game's release date later this year.

The report states that the team are trying to understand how a battle royale game would work within the confines of Battlefield's regular mechanics, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Battlefield V will have this mode. So do this mean that it will take on the form of a typical 100-players parachute in with only one person left standing at the end?

The battle royale genre is about to get very crowded.

Yet, having seen "Fortnite" developer Epic Games hit gold after spinning off "Fortnite: Battle Royale" as a standalone free download, could EA greenlight a separate "Battlefield: Battle Royale" release, taking on the might of "PUBG" and "Fortnite" even more directly?

Last month, Venturebeat reported that the next Battlefield game is a core title in the series that returns to World War II.

But EA of all people should be aware of the dangers of chasing trends; the firm was also in on the MOBA craze with its own, Dawngate, but that ended up being cancelled as the market had already solidified with League of Legends and DOTA 2.
