Participants are exploring issues including the media and the judiciary's respective roles in ensuring the rule of law, and in times of elections safeguard the fundamental rights to freedom of expression, and addressing crimes against journalists.

"By openly and aggressively targeting journalists and media outlets, the current USA administration risks undermining media freedom and creates a culture where journalists find themselves unprotected", the report says.

This comes days after India slipped two positions in the World Press Freedom Index 2018 to Rank 138 in theb list of 180 countries. Names are submitted by regional and worldwide non-governmental organisations working for press freedom, and by UNESCO member states.

In a statement, PEC said it "deplored the dramatic increase in media victims as the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day tomorrow, Thursday 3 May 2018", adding that the number of journalists killed from January to April has soared by 57 percent from the same period previous year. Journalists and media workers shine a light on local and global challenges and tell the stories that need to be told.
