Sajid Javid named Britain's new Home Secretary as Amber Rudd resigns

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid is seen as a uniting figure and has issued a plea to ethnic minorities to look at the Government's efforts to'put things right over Windrush

In January, India's Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, signed an agreement with Britain on the swift return of Indian illegal immigrants from the United Kingdom, an issue that has been repeatedly raised by British government officials to their Indian counterparts.

Britain's Theresa May appointed Sajid Javid as her new interior minister on Monday, promoting the former banker to try to draw a line under an immigration scandal that has threatened the prime minister's authority. He's the first Asian to hold such a high government position.

"People who have entered the United Kingdom illegally or overstayed here should expect to face the full force of the law and know that they will be removed if they will not leave this country voluntarily". But she felt it "necessary" to tender her resignation after the emergence of documents, addressed to her office, showing those goals were in place.

Rudd then made a decision to resign rather than face the Commons on Monday, with her letter to May saying she had "become aware of information provided to my office which makes mention of targets".

The views of Mr Javid, the son of an immigrant bus driver, on migration are notably more liberal than those of Mrs May.

On Monday, Labour was successfully granted an Urgent Question on Windrush with Mr Javid, having only been in post a few hours, taking to the Commons dispatch box to pledge a "fair and humane" immigration policy.

She is the fifth departure from Prime Minister Theresa May's Cabinet. Rudd opposed Brexit but Javid, a lukewarm "remainer", has said that after the referendum, "in some ways, we are all Brexiteers now.".

Many in May's Conservative Party, welcomed the appointment, with Liz Truss, a treasury minister, writing on Twitter that Javid "is effective, no-nonsense and fearless".

Mr Javid's appointment was welcomed by Cabinet colleagues.

Mr Javid was replaced as Housing and Communities Secretary by James Brokenshire, who has recently returned to Westminster after treatment for cancer, while International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt took on Ms Rudd's equalities brief.

WATCH: What is the Windrush scandal and why has Amber Rudd resigned?

Britain's interior ministry, or Home Office, is known in government as one of the toughest departments to lead, charged with immigration, the police and security at a volatile time of public spending cuts, Islamist attacks and Brexit talks. He criticised ministers for referring to illegal immigration in its response to the row.

Named after the British ship Empire Windrush, which arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex with 492 Caribbean passengers in 1948, the Windrush immigrants never formalised their status, often because they were children who came over on their parents' passports and then never applied for their own. Some have lost jobs and fallen into debt as they struggled to prove their status.

The main opposition Labour Party accused Rudd of being a "human shield" for May.

While interior minister between 2010 and 2016, Mrs May pioneered controversial policies meant to create a "hostile environment" for people in Britain illegally.

"Amber Rudd was a very able cabinet minister, but she did the right thing in the circumstances", he said.
