While Tiger Woods, who just creeped into the weekends play, shot a third-round 68, leaving him on one under heading into the final round.

"I didn't think there was a round lower than 4, 5 under out there and then [Uihlein] shoots 9 [under] and I got it to 7", said Mickelson, who is alone in 10th place five strokes back.

Johnson Wagner, a member at Quail Hollow, also had back-to-back eagles when he drove the green on the par-4 14th to 6 feet, and then hit the green on the par-5 15th hole and made a 45-foot putt.

He recovered beautifully from a wild tee shot on the final hole by cutting a short iron from the pine needles to the back fringe and two-putted for his par. Again, I just did not putt well, and I didn't make a birdie today.

The greens at Quail Hollow have perplexed Woods all week.

Peter Malnati and Tiger Woods both had reason to celebrate on the ninth green at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the end of their rounds. Down man had three birdies and a bogey to his name as he made the turn, and looked set to finish on a hot-streak as he carded four straight birdies from the 14th hole.

He can, however, use Saturday's effort as a springboard to enter the week of the Players Championship in a confident frame of mind. I didn't know what to expect.

Rookie Aaron Wise had tracked Day for most of the afternoon but bogeys on two of his last three holes dropped him into a tie for third with Peter Uihlein, who narrowly missed the course record with a nine-under 62, Bryson DeChambeau (66) and Englishman Paul Casey (69). He'll have a decent shot at a win in his 12th start of the year.

"Struggled with my game, struggled to get my ball in the fairway, made some pretty bad mistakes, didn't birdie any of the par 5s", McIlroy said. McIlroy three-putted the last hole and still shot 66.

And it could have been even better, as a three-putt bogey on 18 left a sour taste on what was otherwise a very solid round.

Among the early starters, McIlroy wasted little time reacquainting himself with the venue, as he struck a birdie on the par four second hole when he pitched to within 10 feet from 138 yards and stroked home with the minimum of fuss.

The 28-year-old drew criticism from traditionalists after he claimed the Augusta Championship has now become "the biggest golf tournament in the world".

"I'd much rather be in this position than chasing", Day said.

"For me it's the most special tournament that we play and it's the one everyone desperately wants to win, but even if I was going for my first major, it's still tough to win".
