Ferguson rushed to hospital after suffering brain haemorrhage

Ferguson is being cared for in the neurological unit at Salford Royal hospital, one of the best in the United Kingdom. Concerns for Ferguson's health mounted when it was announced his son, Darren, the manager of English third-tier club Doncaster, would miss his side's match against Wigan because of "family reasons". Here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery.

Ferguson began his playing career with Scottish club Queen's Park as a 16-year-old striker while working as an apprentice tool-worker at Clyde Shipyards. "I am concerned and I'm thinking about him and his family", said the Frenchman. The man who couldn't abide social media when he was manager now embraces it. Ferguson read an interview online with the Brazilian midfielder Anderson in January and made contact with his former player, who adores him and saw him as a father figure as he lost his own aged 12.

Departing Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also expressed his best wishes to Sir Alex at the start of his farewell speech at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon after watching his side beat Burnley 5-0.

Javier Hernandez: All my prayers and thoughts as well are with him and his family!

Former United and England captain Wayne Rooney said on Twitter: "Get well soon Boss". Thoughts with all the family at this sad time.

United ended a 26-year wait for the league title by triumphing in the inaugural season of the Premier League in 1992-93, before claiming their first ever league and FA Cup double the following year. "I hope he has a full recovery". "Edwin & Annemarie", said the couple's Twitter post.

The detail on Ferguson's condition was limited to the statement from United. "Be strong. Win this one".

Calum said the thoughts of the Best family are with Sir Alex and George Best will be looking down on Sir Alex during this hard time.

Usain Bolt, one of Manchester United's most famous fans, has offered his support to Alex Ferguson following the legendary manager's emergency surgery. Stay strong boss. Thoughts are with you and your family.

City were quick to tweet: "Everyone at Manchester City wishes Sir Alex Ferguson a full and speedy recovery after his surgery".

The 76-year-old was United manager from 1986 to 2013, winning the Champions League twice, the Premier League 13 times and five FA Cups.

The 13-time Premier League victor was pictured at the Theatre of Dreams last weekend to hand long-time rival Arsene Wenger a gift on the Frenchman's final appearance as Arsenal boss at the stadium.

Ferguson has been married to wife Cathy since 1966.
