He said temperatures needed to soar above 23.6C (74.48F) yesterday in the United Kingdom for it to be the hottest May Day bank holiday on record.

TEMPERATURES soared to more than 22C in parts of the North-East as people rounded off their three-day weekend - making it the hottest Bank Holiday Monday in 40 years.

The RAC predicts 1.91 million vehicle journeys on Monday will be made with traffic expected to peak between 10am to 4pm.
