Trump Tweets Against Blankenship in West Virginia

President Donald Trump arrives for a roundtable discussion on tax reform in White Sulpher Springs West Virginia on Apr

Claiming that Blankenship "can't win the General Election", Trump on Monday alluded to the U.S. Senate special election in Alabama past year, where he made a similar endorsement.

Don Blankenship said on Monday that he is "Trumpier than Trump" in response to a tweet from the president urging West Virginians to support the GOP Senate candidate's primary opponents. "I will win the primary and I will beat Joe Manchin".

This has alarm bells ringing for some Republicans who worry that a win by a candidate seen by some as unelectable could mean the party could ultimately lose the general election against Democrat Sen.

During last year's special election for an open U.S. Senate seat in Alabama, Trump backed Luther Strange over Roy Moore in the Republican primary. "Remember Alabama. Vote Rep. Jenkins or A.G. Morrisey!" "Let's find the very best person in West Virginia and not have a situation where we can't compete in November". "Does Blankenship winning all of a sudden put this off the table for the Republicans?"

Jenkins told Fox News he's glad Trump injected himself in the race.

The victor of that special election will face Sen. Sure, Trump endorsed Moore's primary opponent - appointed Sen.

Blankenship served a one-year prison term for conspiring to willfully violate mine safety standards at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch Mine, where 29 miners were killed in a 2010 explosion.

Indiana Senate candidate Mike Braun, right, speaks during a GOP Senate debate in April.

While Blankenship has made national headlines for his attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, he's widely known across the Mountain State for his involvement in the coal industry and Republican politics.

"The establishment is misinforming him because they do not want me to be in the U.S. Senate and promote the President's agenda", he continued.

"This tweet is really a defining moment in the campaign because I think that it's going to make it clear that Don Blankenship should be rejected", Morrisey said on Bloomberg Radio.

Blankenship's campaign argued that failing to disclose his finances was a non-issue.

Mr. McConnell, who is profoundly unpopular among Republican primary voters, has mainly sidestepped the attacks, but his allies also have continued to assail Mr. Blankenship.

West Virginia gave Donald Trump his largest margin of victory in the nation in 2016.

President Donald Trump weighed in on the West Virginia Senate race through a tweet Monday morning.

"What the president is saying is let's help this country", McCarthy said. "We need to win in November".

Blankenship's statement blamed "the establishment" for Trump's comment about him and said he would defeat Manchin.

On Sunday, Morrisey held a press conference where he slammed Blankenship and raised questions about his failure to file a personal financial disclosure form as required by law. Morrisey said he plans to forward information to Blankenship's probation officer to determine whether it's a violation of Blankenship's supervised release.
