'It's like a mirage': Is North Korea actually ready to give up its nukes?
North Korea has accused the U.S. of "deliberately provoking" it ahead of the landmark summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump. Experts said the regime's willingness to discuss denuclearization, however, was likely due to a combination of South Korean and Chinese diplomacy, combined with the global sanctions Trump promoted.
"The President is looking forward to his upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un". The landmark summit will take place in "mid-June", South Korea's Chosun Ilbo daily reported on Monday, citing diplomatic sources who quoted Trump's NSA John Bolton. The report did not give further explanation.
The warning comes after President Trump confirmed to reporters Friday that United States and North Korean officials have agreed on a "time and place" to hold the historic summit; the first meeting between an American president and the ruler of North Korea in history.
Still, given Trump's unpredictability, the possibility remains that he could change course and decide he would prefer to meet in Panmunjom. "The fact that it was also the backdrop for the inter-Korean summit last month is perhaps the main factor counting against it". The U.S. leader attempted to visit the Demilitarized Zone by helicopter last November during his visit to the South, but the trip was halted by poor visibility.
But "it is also familiar ground for the North Koreans", according to Graham, having hosted earlier track-2, or backchannel, talks involving officials from the country.
Other sites that have been touted as a potential location for the summit are Sweden, Switzerland and Mongolia.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Moon will represent China and South Korea, respectively, at the summit in Tokyo.
On Sunday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) published a statement from North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which similarly denounced Washington for positioning the inter-Korean summit as a "result of so-called sanctions and pressure".
It would not be conducive to resolving the issue of denuclearisation if Washington miscalculated North Korea's "peace-loving intention" as a sign of weakness and continued to pursue its pressure and military threats, KCNA said.
In a Korean language version of the statement, the foreign ministry also warned the USA that it should not misjudge North Korea's recent diplomatic efforts as "weakness".
North Korea's leadership said Kim was responsible for the current progress.
