Watch: CIA nominee Gina Haspel faces senators' questions
"Having served in that tumultuous time, I can offer you my personal commitment, clearly and without reservation, that under my leadership, C.I.A. will not re-start such a detention and interrogation program".
Warner said he appreciates that Haspel has acknowledged the history of the programme and that she is committed to upholding the law, but "it is not enough".
Haspel was dodging these questions pretty desperately, saying that the torture program was "technically legal". Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Martin Heinrich, D-N.M.
Wyden warned it would set a damaging precedent "if this administration is allowed to get away with what I consider to be a secret confirmation" for the most visible official in U.S. intelligence.
Haspel took charge in 2002 of a secret Central Intelligence Agency detention facility in Thailand where an al-Qaida suspect was waterboarded, and in 2005 she drafted a cable, ultimately issued by her boss, ordering the destruction of dozens of videotapes of the interrogation sessions. Not only that, when the agency was being evacuated in the wake of 9/11, she walked into the counterterrorism center and famously said, "Put me to work!" However, she said she supports the "higher moral standards" that the country has since adopted that ban torture. Waterboarding is a technique that simulates the experience of drowning. Additionally, though, the CIA's decision to selectively declassify no more than a handful of pages from her more than three decade career makes it impossible for the American people to fairly evaluate someone who has been nominated for a Cabinet-level position. The 2011 memo that the CIA released summarizes a disciplinary review conducted by then-CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell.
King criticized Haspel's alleged lack of transparency regarding her involvement with the CIA's detention and interrogation program and the destruction of videotapes related to the program, which involved waterboarding.
Haspel said, too, that she "conducted myself honorably and in accordance with USA law", and that she understands "the difference between right and wrong" when senators challenged her over why she went along with a program most now liken to torture, and the agency's efforts to cover it up.
Ms Haspel declined to confirm whether she had overseen waterboarding sessions. Functionally, Republicans now hold 50 seats to the Democrats 49, as Sen.
"Ms Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing".
McCain has been absent from the Senate while battling brain cancer, but has continued to stay engaged with Washington.
On 9/11, "we lost 3,000 Americans", Hannity said, questioning why Democrats like Reed and Wyden would take umbrage at talk of interrogating terrorists. By the way, to be the kind of feminist acceptable to the left you also have to pledge allegiance to the right to kill one's unborn child for any reason through the full nine months of pregnancy, including through the birth process itself.
CNN reportedearlier Wednesday that several Republican senators remained undecided on how they would vote but Republican Sen. She has served the country as a patriot. "She's a great professional". "I excelled in finding and acquiring secret information that I obtained in brush passes, dead drops, or in meetings in dusty back allies of third world capitals". "I know them, I know the threats we face, and I know what we need to be successful in our mission". When I picked him up, he passed me the intelligence, and I passed him an extra $500 for the men he led. "It was the beginning of an adventure I had only dreamed of".
Senators want to know from Gina Haspel what she would do if President Donald Trump ordered her to waterboard a detainee.
In a Twitter post on Wednesday night, Trump said: "Gina Haspel did a spectacular job today".
The Center for Constitutional Rights and retired general and flag officers of the USA military also wrote to express their concern about Haspel's nomination. The message that will send dictators, the letter said, is that "their behavior is no different from ours".
