'Mini-Trump' candidates battle it out in Republican primaries

There are several House races Democrats plan to target in OH come November, but the one that could best give insight into November's elections is the 12th District contest to replace former GOP Rep.

Indiana Republican Party Chairman Kyle Hupfer has declared Mike Braun the victor of the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate.

Messer and Rokita attacked Braun for his past votes in Democratic primaries.

"I don't think that the folks from the 3rd District, the most conservative, most Republican congressional district in the State of in are ready for that kind of politics", Shine said.

A night Republicans feared would end in disaster in at least one state instead produced Senate nominees that party leaders are pleased to run against three vulnerable Democratic senators in November's midterm elections. Richard Ojeda, a populist Democrat who made a name for himself during the teacher's strike has generated a lot of enthusiasm in the race to replace Jenkins in the House. "Who is going to fight to protect our good paying jobs, and additionally who will be an independent voice for IN?"

Earlier this week President Donald Trump tweeted that Republicans would lose the general election if Blankenship won the primary.

Other Republican primary races in OH and West Virginia on Tuesday also feature outsider businessmen who have gone all out to show their allegiance to Trump and accuse their rivals of lacking the same fealty.

If Braun's concerned, he wasn't showing it Tuesday while basking in the glow of supporters after his double-digit victory over two congressmen - Todd Rokita and Luke Messer.

"It's clear [Indiana voters] want a champion for working families in the Senate - one who'll work hard and reach across the aisle to protect their access to affordable health care, defend Medicare and Social Security, and keep good-paying jobs here in Indiana", Donnelly campaign manager Peter Hanscom said in a statement. He also has a master's degree in economics from the Harvard Business School before serving three years in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017.

Two members of Mike Pence's gubernatorial administration - Steve Braun and Diego Morales - are running in the heavily Republican 4th Congressional District. And the vice-president's older brother Greg Pence easily won the GOP nomination for Mike's old House seat.

IN uses an open primary system, meaning that voters are not required to register with a party to vote in a party primary.

Looking ahead, Braun explained how he plans to take on Sen.

The Associated Press called the race just before 9 p.m. ET, with Braun leading his two opponents by more than 10 percentage points.

Donnelly, a moderate Democrat, was elected in 2012.

He said Republican voters likely will respond well to Braun's lack of political experience but it is unclear whether he would be the best candidate to defeat Donnelly, considered to be among the most vulnerable Democrats in the nation.
