Who is Patrick Morrisey? A look at the West Virginia Senate hopeful

McConnell team trolls Blankenship after loss

West Virginia GOP Sen candidate Don Blankenship conceded Tuesday with Attorney General Patrick Morrisey taking the nomination. Blankenship's contentious campaign saw him giving Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell the moniker'Cocaine Mitch

Coal baron Don Blankenship has conceded defeat in Tuesday night's West Virginia Senate primary, much to the GOP's relief. Washington has utterly failed us, and I think Joe Manchin's been part of the problem, and so we're gonna work to bring everyone together; I think that's gonna happen quickly, and we're gonna make sure that we're laying out the real, different policy issues.

Donnelly will challenge Mike Braun, a former state lawmaker, in November.

Moore was among a handful of extreme candidates in recent years who have won a Republican nomination only to eventually lose their Senate elections.

Trump first waded into the race last month at a roundtable event on taxes in White Sulphur Springs.

Several incumbent congressmen who faced competitive GOP primaries all won.

Blankenship said Trump's Monday morning tweet urging West Virginia voters to reject him in favor of either Morrisey or Jenkins played a role in his loss.

Rokita and Messer relentlessly attacked Braun for his history of voting in Democratic primaries in a county where the party until recently held a firm grip on local offices. Upon his release, he started to portray himself as the next Donald Trump, indeed as more Trump than Trump himself.

The rise of Braun and the tone of the Republican campaigns in all three states underscored the deep animosity toward Washington that has persisted in the GOP even after Trump's election. I doubt it will fall Democrat as Harris appears more conservative than Pittenger.

Morrisey will now be the Republican who tries to unseat Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.

The races in both states are classified as tossups by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, while the OH contest is rated as "lean Democratic". Standing beside Morrisey and Jenkins, he called on voters to oust Manchin. Problem is, Don Blankenship, now running for Senate, can't win the General Election in your State. No way!

Crooks says she was a 22-year-old receptionist at Trump Tower in 2005 when Mr. Trump kissed her "directly on the mouth" against her will. Mr. Trump denied the claims when they surfaced shortly before the 2016 election. He also said that Morrisey and Jenkins would both need his support to win in November against Manchin. "There are real dangers in tacking too close to Trump", he added. In Ohio, this fall's gubernatorial race will be a contest between Cordray, on the Democratic side, and Mike DeWine-a former USA senator and a close ally of Governor John Kasich-on the Republican side.

Novelist John Grisham named Blankenship as the inspiration for The Appeal, a 2008 portrayal of a ruthless billionaire who finances and grooms the career of a friendly Supreme Court judge. He and former University of Cincinnati board chairman Rob Richardson Jr., a Democrat, will face off in November for the seat held by term-limited GOP Treasurer Josh Mandel.

President Donald Trump welcomed the results in a Wednesday morning tweet, calling it a "great night" for the Republican Party.

"He will be a great Governor with a heavy focus on HealthCare and Jobs", Trump wrote.

With their party out of power, Democratic voters so far have been supportive of mainstream candidates over those from the insurgent wing, and more lenient with their nominees in red states. Republican voters wisely decline to play along in these races.

Meanwhile, GOP voters in IN chose wealthy businessman Mike Braun over two sitting congressmen to lead the party's charge against a vulnerable Democratic senator in the fall.

In 2012, for example, Rep. Todd Akin, a Missouri Republican, was handily defeated by Sen. Both parties view the general election as key to Senate control for the next two years.
