Apple's new video distribution scheme streamlines its subscription system as it does away with the necessity of developing particular apps for the Apple TV and other devices.

Bloomberg, which cited sources familiar with the matter, noted although the TV app now allows users to find video content from a range of other apps and channels, users must download or buy them independently of Apple's app.

According to the report, this move could, in turn, help better Apple's TV app on Apple TV, iPhones and iPads, making it easier for its customers to find, watch as well as buy content. It will also boost the company's growing services business.

Today the TV app includes content from Hulu, HBO Now, Crunchyroll, and video-on-demand apps for channels including ESPN, but Netflix remains a major holdout for real integration. Nobody knows how Apple is going to own original programming works will factor into the subscription service.

According to Bloomberg, sales from services climbed 31 per cent in the Q1, at US$9.2 billion. A user's Apple payment information is used to pay for video services, and the process is completed via third-party apps.

Apple has made no public comment on the news.

There's now more than a dozen Apple TV shows in the works although it remains unclear as to whether there will be a dedicated service built for the content or if it will simply be available via iTunes or Apple Music. Netflix and YouTube (owned by rival Alphabet), operate the two largest online video services in the world outside of China. Over the years, the company has tried exploring various means to expand into the online video industry. Apple could have easily leaned on its vast categories of TV shows and movies to create a compelling lineup.
