Tesla Model S Crashes and Burns Taking Two Lives, NTSB Steps In

Chicago Illinois esla was reportedly traveling at high speed when it hit a wall then caught fire killing two people and injuring a third

The fatal accident happened on Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when a gray 2014 Model S crashed into a concrete wall and burst into flames.

In late March of this year, the NTSB opened another investigation in yet another fatal Tesla crash in Mountain View, California, after a driver crashed into a highway barrier and the vehicle burst into flames.

The NTSB is investigating three other traffic incidents involving Tesla vehicles.

"The goal of these investigations is to understand the impact of these emerging transportation technologies when they are part of a transportation accident", he said.

The NTSB has four active investigations into crashes of the company's electric vehicles. They do not anticipate autopilot being a part of this investigation. Two victims in the front of the auto were killed at the scene, and a third male was injured. Two 18-year-old high school students, Barrett Riley and Edgar Martinez, were trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 150,000 gasoline vehicle fires occur in the USA every year.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends affected by this tragedy", the company said. "Everything we have seen thus far indicates a very high-speed collision and that Autopilot was not engaged", says a Tesla spokesperson, noting that high-speed crashes can be fiery "regardless of the type of auto".

A Tesla representative told Business Insider that the company is "working to establish the facts of the incident" and will cooperate with local authorities. The family who owned the auto has been a close friend of Tesla for many years, and this hits us particularly hard. Serious high-speed collisions can result in a fire, regardless of the type of auto.

The agency is also investigating another Tesla-related fire after a Model X SUV crashed on a freeway in California in March.

Tesla vehicles are known to use Lithium-ion batteries, which can easily catch fire and burn rapidly in the event of a crash.

The federal agency dismissed rumors that the car's Auto Pilot may be at fault.

Tesla said a failure to fix a highway safety barrier contributed to the accident. Each side disagreed over who ended Tesla's party status. Tesla accused the NTSB of violating its own rules, while trying to prevent the automaker from releasing all available information.
