LIVE: At Least One Wounded After Gunman Reportedly Seen On Campus At High School In Palmdale

Authorities say they are trying to figure out why a 14-year-old boy went to his former high school Friday morning and began shooting a semiautomatic rifle shortly before classes were scheduled to begin.

The off-duty officer, who works for Los Angeles police, then detained the teen.

Officials had initially said the victim was 14 years old.

The shooting happened on the campus of Highland High School in Palmdale, California, around 7 a.m. PT, even as some students still were arriving at school.

He says one student was shot in the arm and the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the shooter and the victim.

Authorities say the suspect ran off after the shooting and dumped the rifle along the way before he was caught in a shopping center.

The 911 calls included reports that hostages were being held in the school library, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said in a press conference Friday afternoon.

The FBI and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene.

Highland High School is located about 65 miles from Los Angeles.

Reports of the shooting and an ultimately false report of another attack at a nearby elementary school sparked chaos, terrifying parents and drawing a massive police response in the high desert city of Palmdale in Southern California.

Garret Root, a teacher at the school, told KNBC-TV that he was walking up to the school when he saw a group of students running away and asked them what was happening.

Local media reported that the victim, also 14, was wounded as he was getting out of the vehicle that brought him to the campus. "This is ridiculous - there's too many school shootings", said parent Tracy Reed, whose son texted her about the shooting at his school.

The shooter was detained off campus by officers, at a Vons grocery store, near the school's premises, as reported by CNN.

About a half-hour afterward, calls were received of "shots fired" heard near the campus of Manzanita a Elementary School on the 38600 block of 33rd Street East, the sheriff's department reported.
