French police officers pass next to the place where a man stabbed several people Saturday night in Paris before he was shot dead by police. His identity and motives are not known.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the alleged attacker was "neutralised" by police and praised officers for their actions. "They encircled him and he tried to attack them with a knife but they shot him down", he told reporters.

Later the IS group said it was behind the attack, in a brief statement posted on its news outlet. Investigators have not yet said when the man arrived in France.

A witness who was sitting in a Japanese restaurant with his girlfriend told Le Parisien: Just before 9pm, we saw people rushing inside the restaurant screaming that a man was outside with a bloody knife.

He said the four people injured were recovering and "out of danger" and that authorities were working to identify the suspect along with anyone who may have helped him. "She is recovering. She was operated on and saved", he said after visiting the victims in hospital.
