GETTYAmanda Nunes defends her title against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224

UFC 224 Nunes Pennington

Nunes looked to have a clear speed advantage and her output was higher.

The woman tasked with the job of ending her reign at the summit of the UFC's women's bantamweight division was Ultimate Fighter season 18 star Raquel Pennington, who went into her maiden UFC title fight on the back of a huge victory over Miesha Tate. She paid for the failed takedown attempts, too, as Nunes made a habit of digging knees into the body and head after Pennington bailed on single leg shots. That run included her forty-eight second decimation of Ronda Rousey, who has since left the sport well alone, pursuing a career in the WWE. Pennington wrapped up the arms of Nunes to avoid any damage. Pennington's nose began running blood like a faucet, she turtled up and it was soon over. The fight was stood back up. The difference is, Nunes was able to nab a finish this time.

Despite being significantly down on the scorecards, Pennington showed no urgency and stuck to the strategy which saw her opponent build up an unassailable led on the judges' scorecards. She started to land her jab and follow-up right hand, but she was always forced to move forward as she threw, which seemed to have a negative effect on the power of the shots.

Nunes is rightly considered a huge favourite in this fight, but this is mixed martial arts... literally anything can happen!

Nunes tripped Pennington up with a leg kick early in the first round and was the aggressor throughout the fight. Pennington ate another knee and went for a takedown. At the end of the fourth round, Pennington literally told her corner she was "done" with the fight.

The Brazilian had the contender in an armbar towards the end of the first, but Gastelum didn't let the fight hit the ground again until he dropped Souza at the midway point of the second round.

From there, Nunes kept the pressure on, with takedowns of her own and slowly tenderizing Pennington's face.

Nunes took her opponent down and landed an elbow.
