According to the BBC, "These are the first skirmishes in a potential war between Israel and Iran that promises a fearful level of destruction - even by the standards of the modern Middle East".

The Israeli military earlier said several air raid sirens had sounded in the area of the Golan Heights and it is looking into the cause.

But before Thursday, Iran had not retaliated, seemingly handcuffed while it awaited Trump's decision on the nuclear accord. Zarif accused the U.S. and its allies of fomenting unrest in the Middle East, "turning our region into a powder keg through their sale of hundreds of billions of dollars of useless advanced weaponry".

The extent of the damage inflicted by the Israeli airstrikes was not immediately clear.

Syrian state media said dozens of Israeli missiles struck a radar station, Syrian air defense positions and an ammunition dump, underscoring the risks of a wider escalation involving Iran and its regional allies.

The video shows an Israeli missile hitting a truck carrying an SA-22 missile system.

Hezbollah draws its ranks from a small community of less than two million people.

The possibility of missile supplies to Assad along with its military foray into Syria itself has helped Moscow boost its Middle East clout. with Putin hosting everyone from Netanyahu to the presidents of Turkey and Iran and the Saudi king.

There was no immediate comment from Iran.

Robert Fisk, who has repeatedly challenged dominant US media narratives on the Syrian civil war and other Middle East crises, argued in a column for The Independent on Thursday that the "latest overnight Israeli air strikes, supposedly at Iranian forces in Syria after a supposed Iranian rocket attack on Israeli forces in Golan-and it's important to use the "supposed" and not take all this at face value-must have been known to the Americans in advance". Russia, like Iran, fights in Syria on the side of the Assad government.

"All this has made the head of the Quds Brigade in the IRGC Qassem Soleimani a ruler in Syria", the Syrian opposition official said. Israel has been expecting an attack from Iran's military presence in Syria, which is why they have spent a lot of money fortifying the Iron Dome system over the last few years. It said it intercepted most of the Israeli missiles. "Syria has every right to defend itself", the statement added.

Russian Federation is not in talks with the Syrian government about supplying advanced S-300 ground-to-air missiles and does not think they are needed, the Izvestia daily cited a top Kremlin aide as saying on Friday, in an apparent U-turn by Moscow. "It does require a more comprehensive approach than we've got right now, given that there's not much time before conditions worsen, I certainly hope it's something they come up with".

Speaking while touring the Israeli side of the occupied Golan Heights, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel is not looking for friction.

"It is time for responsible nations to bring pressure on Iran to change this risky behavior". Siren alerts were sounded soon around midnight in the north and centre of the Golan Heights in northern Israel. In 1974, Israel and Syria reached a cease-fire and a disengagement deal that froze the conflict lines with the plateau in Israeli hands.

Iran's foreign minister will travel to Moscow on May 14 and meet his Russian counterpart, Russia's RIA news agency said, citing a Russian foreign ministry official.
