Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December, triggering a joyous reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. On Tuesday, Palestinians mark what they call the "Nakba" or Catastrophe, in memory of the more than 700,000 Palestinians who were either driven from, or fled, their homes during the Arab-Israeli war that accompanied the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.

"I think that the reluctance always before - because as has been pointed out, several previous presidents committed to move the embassy to Jerusalem - I think the hesitation has been, that it would end any prospect of an agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis", Gates told "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan.

According to a post on Beitar Jerusalem's Facebook page, Jerusalem had waited long enough- 70 years to be precise- for global recognition, and President Trump was the one to finally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The US president's daughter said she was returning "with great joy" to Jerusalem, which Donald Trump has recognised as Israel's capital to the dismay of Palestinians, who claim part of the holy city as the capital of a future state.

Arab media have speculated that Egypt, one of only two Arab countries to have a peace treaty with Israel, could ease border restrictions with Gaza and offer economic relief in exchange for protesters not trying to breach the fence. In contrast, during last Friday's protests there were five flash points.

More than 40 Palestinians have been killed in the latest violence.

Since border rallies began on March 30, at least 48 Palestinians have been martyred - and hundreds more injured - by cross-border Israeli army gunfire, according to the Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated since Trump announced that the USA would withdraw from the 2015 global nuclear pact with Iran. The new embassy is due to open on Monday. "Today's move of the USA embassy gives life to a religious conflict instead of a dignified peace". "You deserve a better future", the leaflets said.

The move prompted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to halt ties with the Trump administration, declaring it unfit to remain in its role as the sole mediator in peace talks.

Friedman confirmed that Trump will "be there on video" at the embassy ceremony and that Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, a senior White House aide, will speak in person.

He tells ABC's "This week" that "if you're not prepared to recognize that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and that's where the American Embassy should be, then you're operating on a completely different wavelength".
