FBI Has Suspect in Damaging CIA Leak of Spying Code

16 May 2018, 12:42 | Rufus Hill

Former CIA engineer, 29, facing a child pornography charge is also suspected of leaking devastating secret agency documents to Wikileaks

В США установили подозреваемого в утечке данных Центра киберразведки ЦРУ

The prime suspect in the leak of a trove of stolen Central Intelligence Agency documents that appeared on WikiLeaks past year has been identified as a Manhattan man who is behind bars even though he hasn't been charged in the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Laroche alluded to a "broader investigation" and a grand jury probe unrelated to child pornography charges as he informed a Manhattan judge last Friday that the government was hopeful it would bring new charges against 29-year-old Joshua Adam Schulte in about a month and a half. Hopefully more information will come out.

Roger said his son was in college when he set up the server later claimed to contain child pornography, and that he "had so many people accessing it he didn't care what people put on it".

Schulte's connection to the leak investigation has not been previously reported.

The Washington Post first reported on Schulte's relation to the case. But that failed to provide the evidence that prosecutors needed to indict Schulte with illegally giving the information to WikiLeaks. They conducted a number of search warrants on the defendant's residence.

"Those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with [Schulte's] involvement in that disclosure", said assistant USA attorney in the Southern District of New York Matthew Laroche. That includes the fact they he is believed to have used software called Tor, which allows users to communicate and transmit information over the Internet anonymously, and the fact he was planning a vacation to Cancun, Mexico.

The Post reports that federal prosecutors obtained a search warrant a year ago for personal computers and hand-written notes from Schulte's apartment, but that investigators didn't find any evidence linking Schulte to the disclosure.

That cache would eventually be disclosed as the "Vault 7" data dump.

Rather, he is being charged with operating a server that contained a 54GB container of child abuse content (we're not going to label it as "pornography" out of respect for adult entertainment performers).

He has plead not guilty to the charges.

He was then tossed back in jail in December after prosecutors found evidence that he had broken those rules, and he has been held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan since then, according to the paper's report. The former prosecutor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an open investigation, also said that if government lawyers acknowledged in a public hearing that Schulte was a target, they probably suspect he acted alone. He was in the CIA for the development of a computer code to the intelligence of foreign adversaries.

Government prosecutors say Joshua Adam Schulte of NY is a target in the theft investigation.
